Below Deck Med star Captain Sandy Yawn celebrated 33 years of sobriety. Earlier this week, she took to Instagram to share an emotional post. She then posted a PSA to fans who are struggling with alcohol and substance abuse issues. The reality star announced the major milestone along with a throwback photo of herself.
This comes three months after Sandy shared an important health PSA with her fans. She advised them to get on top of their health. She recalled a scary time when she suffered a heart attack during a SoulCycle class. Now, she wants to talk about the importance of sobriety.
Below Deck Med star releases a new PSA
Captain Sandy took to Instagram to show a photo of herself drinking water and standing in the desert. She recently celebrated 33 years of sobriety. The longtime captain is telling Below Deck Med fans with addiction to seek help. She shared a time when she gave up drugs and alcohol.
“It’s been 33 years clean for me. From jails, institutions, car crashes, motorcycle accidents, hospitals, bankruptcy, heart attack & cancer,” Sandy wrote in the caption. “I felt like a hopeless human being, always in trouble, people turning away from me because I was so destructive. The day finally came when I had my last drink and drug on August 29th, 1989. My life is beyond my wildest dreams.”
She’s hoping that her story will inspire others to do the same. Sandy informed her fans and followers to call the hotline before they hit rock bottom. She expressed “gratitude” for being healthy and sober. This comes a year after Sandy celebrated 32 years of sobriety and shared a similar message.
Shahs of Sunset star Mercedes Javid commented: “congratulations.” Chalene Johnson wrote: “You’re [sic] former mess has become your message!” Leah McSweeney from The Real Housewives of New York commented with the red heart and fire emojis. Meanwhile, Tracy Tutor from Million Dollar Listing L.A. Wrote: “Congratulations @captainsandrayawn what a comeback!”
Captain Sandy Yawn helped RHOC with her sobriety
The Real Housewives of Orange County alum Braunwyn Windham-Burke credited the Below Deck Med star for her sobriety. She was aware of the Bravo star’s sobriety. Braunwyn reached out to Sandy’s girlfriend Leah Schafer and asked to speak with her. After an hour-long conversation, she asked Sandy if it was possible to be sober and on reality TV.
“Absolutely, but you need to own it on the show,” Sandy told Braunwyn. “You need to be accountable, otherwise, you’re going to drink again.”
That inspired the social justice advocate to share her story on the show. Braunwyn immediately called the producers and they got started on filming. Sandy inspired many of her fans for her longtime sobriety. They thanked her for being open and honest.
