It’s that time again for fans of NBC’s last remaining soap opera. Time to worry if Days of Our Lives will get renewed or canceled.

The network is currently in negotiations for a renewal. While many primetime shows get multi-year renewals, NBC has only been renewing DOOL for one season at a time.

What are the chances of viewers spending another season in fictional Salem?

One of Four Remaining Soap Operas

The 1980s are commonly thought of as a monumental decade for soap operas. The three main networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) boasted 20 soap operas at one point. However, due to low ratings, there are only four soap operas currently airing.

NBC and ABC both have only one soap opera left – Days of Our Lives and General Hospital, respectively. The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful both air on CBS.

Talk show host Kelly Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos are working on bringing All My Children back. ABC canceled the show in 2011, though it had one last season with Prospect Park production company. The final season aired online.

Both Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos appeared on AMC. The proposed reboot would air in primetime.

In late 2019, a report about Days of Our Lives releasing the cast from their contracts caused uproar among fans. The reports were much ado about nothing, as going on a temporary hiatus is a new normal for the NBC soap.

However, fans didn’t know that. And news outlets stoked the flames of cancellation rumors. DOOL was ultimately renewed for Season 56, which is currently airing.

Days of Our Lives Goes Dark Again Amid Negotiations

Here we go again, DOOL fans. It’s time for NBC to decide if Days of Our Lives will get another season. Unlike other soaps, DOOL films six months in advance of airing.

That filming schedule paid off during the pandemic when the other soaps had to dip into the archives to air old episodes. Meanwhile, Days of Our Lives aired new episodes long after other shows ran out.

However, filming in advance also means wrapping up filming earlier than other soap operas. As TV Line reports, Days of Our Lives ended production on Season 56 last week.

Does that mean the show is canceled? Not necessarily.
