90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way and Ethiopian gursha

The TLC reality franchise introduces fans to a melting pot of cultures. 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way particularly showcases different lands, traditions and cuisine. In the latest episode. Ariela, Janice and Biniyam meet up with his family for a get-together. Ariela, of course, knew Biniyam before and has experienced Ethiopian traditions. However, her boyfriend’s family was keen to impress her mother, Janice, with their cuisine and hospitality.

The trio meets up with Biniyam’s brother Yosef and his sisters, Ethfa and Wish, for dinner. At first, Janice is a little nervous, as they order a meal which is “raw meat.” Biniyam goes on to explain to Janice that the meat is “not prepared” and is mixed with butter. However, when Wish feeds a bite of the food to Janice, her face lights up with pleasure.

Ethfa and Wish explain the Ethiopian tradition of gursha to Janice. This is where Ethiopians feed each other by hand as a sign of respect. So what is the gursha tradition all about?

90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way fans learn Ethiopian tradition

According to CNN, Ethiopian cuisine is gaining popularity in the world. The dishes are delicious and distinctive and are for sharing. Diners share the food on a communal platter and includes “injera,” a flatbread with a spongy texture. Another main ingredient is “kitfo,” the “raw meat” ingredient. Injera is served with all traditional Ethiopian meals, much like bread in other countries. In fact, it is a type of sourdough made with an ancient grain called “teff.”

The kitfo ingredient of the meal is raw beef mince, marinated in a chili powder spice blend, known as “mitmita.” Moreover, another ingredient is “niter kibbeh,” an Ethiopian spicy, clarified butter.

Food etiquette in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian food etiquette of gursha involves eating with the right hand. The gursha, or sharing practice of the meal, is what makes it so intimate. Gursha is an Amharic word meaning “mouthful.” Performing the tradition involves taking a morsel of meat or curry, wrapped in injera, and feeding it to someone else at the table.

The person honored with this mouthful then returns the favor to another. Moreover, the larger the gursha, the stronger the bond of friendship between the diners. As it is adults or elders who receive the first gursha, it was an honor for Janice from Biniyam’s family.

So far on this season, Ariela’s mother has been apprehensive of her daughter living in Ethiopia. To her, it is a foreign country with different traditions. Moreover, Janice is suspicious of Biniyam, having seen him dancing with his ex-girlfriend at the club. However, the act of gursha does seem to warm her up to Biniyam’s family. In the meanwhile, his family appears to have unequivocally accepted Ariela without knowing much about their love.

Hopefully, the loving relationship between Ariela and Biniyam will continue to grow as the baby’s birth looms. As noted by Screen Rant, we will just have to continue watching this season of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way on Mondays at 9 pm EST on TLC to find out.
