‘Dateline’: Drew Peterson Gives First Interview In Over A Decade

Drew Peterson

For their Friday, November 19th episode, Dateline covers the Drew Peterson case. NBC correspondent Natalie Morales interviews Peterson for details about the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, and the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson. This episode is the first time Drew Peterson gives an interview for network television in over a decade. Keep reading for more details.

How did Drew Peterson end up in prison?

Drew Peterson is currently incarcerated based on a conviction for the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. In 2013, 5Chicago, an NBC affiliate, reported on the case. Initially, officials ruled Savio’s death an accident. Her neighbors found her body in a dry bathtub at home. However, when Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, went missing, law enforcement decided to take a second look at Kathleen’s case. About three years after her passing, Kathleen’s death was reclassified as a homicide.

In 2013, Drew Peterson was convicted for the murder of Kathleen Savio. The former police officer shouted to the court, “I did not kill Kathleen!”

Peterson gets another conviction

Then in 2016, Peterson was also convicted of “solicitation of murder for hire.”  It seems that Peterson took issue with Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow. 5Chicago recounts a statement Drew Peterson gave to defend his innocence.  Peterson describes Glasgow as having an “obsessive investigation.” Peterson even cries while giving this statement.

As Glasgow points out, Peterson’s outburst about not killing Kathleen gave everyone an image of the “real Drew Peterson.”

We all got an opportunity to see a psychopath. When he got up on the stand and that shrill, kind of feminine screech that he didn’t kill Kathy, that’s the guy that killed Kathy. You got a glimpse of his soul.”

What happened to Stacy Peterson?

What happened to Stacy Peterson is unknown. Stacy has been missing for 14 years. At the time of her disappearance in 2007, she was only 23-years-old. Her sister, Cassandra Cales, believes that Drew killed Stacy and disposed of her body. Cales hasn’t stopped looking for her sister.

Back in May 2021, Cassandra Cales reported to law enforcement that sonar indicated that there were skeletal remains in a Chicago canal. Cales employed the sonar search crew herself.  She tells Fox 32 Chicago, “I’m not going to stop if you want it done right; you have to do it yourself.”

The crew located the skeletal remains in the Des Plaines River. Fox News reports that the remains were found near the Lockport Powerhouse. The power station is located north of Joliet, Illinois. The video that captures the bones is from an area of water that is about 21 feet deep and murky.

Stacy’s sister expresses her frustration

In October 2021, Cassandra Cales spoke with the media. It seems that it frustrates Cales that it took five months for dive crews to search the river. She says:

I am beyond frustrated. It’s definitely somebody. I can’t say it’s my sister. But why take so long to go and retrieve something?”

While Drew Peterson hasn’t been charged with Stacy’s disappearance, likely, he will not be released from prison. He is currently serving a 38-year sentence for Kathleen Savio’s death. After that, he’s to do another 40 years for the 2016 conviction that he plotted to kill James Glasgow. Peterson is 67-years-old.
