When Will ‘Derry Girls’ Season 3 Hit Netflix?

We know Netflix renewed Derry Girls for a Season 3, but when is the release date? Unfortunately, COVID-19 did throw a wrench in the plans for Season 3 of Derry Girls. While another season is definitely going to happen. It isn’t happening on the originally planned schedule.

In fact, the pandemic has caused things to get pushed back pretty significantly. That being said, fans of the series just have one simple question. When? When is the release date getting pushed back to? Here’s what we know.

What is Derry Girls, anyway?

Now, if you haven’t had a chance to check out Derry Girls yet… It is definitely one to add to your watch list if you enjoy the other foreign comedies in the streaming library. The series takes place in Northern Ireland. It tells the story of four teenage girls in high school. The girls get into all kinds of trouble.

Now, Derry Girls is labeled as a Netflix Originals. But, it is another one of those series Netflix purchased after it was created. Channel 4 produced the series in the UK. And, Netflix picked it up to distribute it around the world. Likewise, this isn’t even the first Channel 4 production that Netflix has picked up as an exclusive.

Season 2 of Derry Girls has been available on Netflix around the world for a little while now. This is with the exception of in the United Kingdom. They will have to wait about another year before Netflix will release it on their U.K. platform.

Derry Girls Season 3 was renewed back in April of 2019. It was so successful it was instantly renewed after Season 2 was a wrap. But, the pandemic caused a huge delay in the production of Season 3.

There is a massive stall in the Netflix release of Derry Girls Season 3

Production of Derry Girls Season 3 was expected to happen in June of 2020, according to What’s On Netflix. But, COVID-19 got in the way. Now, they are not expected to start production until late 2021 because of schedules and such. So, those hoping for a Derry Girls Season 3 Netflix release date are looking at waiting until 2022.

While this is definitely a downer, it is better to be safe than sorry on the production of these sets. Getting back into the swing of production proves to be challenging for some studios as the virus delaying things may cause scheduling issues for those in the cast.
