Below Deck Med star Captain Sandy Yawn had an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair. As TV Shows Ace previously reported, she revealed that Season 5 was difficult to film. It was the most dramatic season yet. There were firings, angry chefs, and fighting crew members.

While that’s common in the Below Deck world, it seemed like it was on another level. Speaking of firings, Bravo fired Peter Hunziker for a racist and misogynistic post he shared on social media. Additionally, his image was wiped from the season. This led fans to wonder why Peter was left in the background.

At the beginning of the season, he often referred bosun Malia White as a “sweetheart.” But, apparently, she wasn’t the only one.

Captain Sandy Yawn shares details on Peter Hunziker

In her interview with Vanity Fair, Sandy revealed that Peter also called her “sweetheart.” But, fans didn’t get to see that play out on Below Deck Med. Apparently, Peter did it on more than one occasion. This led Sandy to have a sit-down conversation with the deckhand.

“He was calling me sweetheart; they just didn’t show it,” Sandy told the magazine.

I had a conversation with him down in the crew mess and I just said, ‘You still have a responsibility. Imagine if you were that child that you’re sitting here talking about right now. And your kid is watching TV and hears you saying that. How would you feel?'”

Sandy is no longer in touch with Peter. In fact, she doesn’t keep in touch with most who appear on the show. The only ones she’s close to are Christine “Bugsy” Drake, Max Hagley, Malia White, Colin Macey-O’Toole, and João Franco. Sandy also hears from Bobby Giancola. But, only “when he wants something.”

Sandy wasn’t the only one who had a problem with Peter. Malia didn’t like it whenever he called her “sweetheart.” He also tried to mansplain his job to her. She made that revelation on the Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen After Show.

“I really didn’t know how to react to Pete at first,” Malia explained. “So I think I played it really careful. And I think maybe I learned a lesson too.”

Malia admitted she was “pretty timid” when interacting with Peter. She wasn’t sure how to make the right call. But then, she realized that she’s serious about her position and she demands respect. So, she had to let him know that he can’t talk to his superiors like that.

Why Captain Sandy loves filming Below Deck Med so much

Sandy has received the most backlash out of Season 5 of Below Deck Med. Fans blamed her for the firings of Chef Hindrigo “Kiko” Lorran and chief stew Hannah Ferrier. They also slammed her for micromanaging her crew. Despite the backlash, Sandy claims to “love” her job. She also claims that she’s not creating a hidden “agenda,” no matter what the fans think.
