Idris Elba teases Netflix movie of BBC One series Luther

Netflix is adapting the BBC crime series Luther as an Original movie. Leading actor Idris Elba is posting teasers on social media. The exciting, multiple Emmy nominated series and Golden Globe actor are coming back to the small screen in film format.

Luther is a British psychological crime drama series starring Idris Elba as DCI John Luther. The series, written by Neil Cross, also stars Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan. In the series, DCI John Luther (Elba) is a murder detective, perpetually drawn into the darkness of the crimes he is investigating. Meanwhile, Ruth Wilson’s character, Alice Morgan is a brilliant psychopath and murderer with whom he has a twisted relationship of sorts.

Season 1 ran from May through June 2010 with six episodes. Meanwhile, BBC One also aired a second season in June and July 2011. The popular series went on to air in a third, fourth and fifth season on the UK television channel, ending in 2019.

Awards for the BBC One series

Idris Elba won a Critics’ Choice Television Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his striking performance as John Luther.

Meanwhile, the series also received 11 Primetime Emmy Award nominations in a number of categories. Among these were four nominations for Elba as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie.

Luther to be adapted as a Netflix movie

The crime drama series Luther was a huge hit for BBC One, but it turns out it isn’t over yet. Fans are no doubt excited after Elba posted a series of behind-the-scenes images from a Netflix movie. In the teasers, images of a Luther clapper board and his uniform as the BBC detective were among them.

In one tweet, Idris Elba wrote: “Oi……I’m back!” Meanwhile, an Instagram post featured the geotag “On Set.”

Who is producing the Netflix Original movie?

Deadline reports that the movie is to be directed by Jaime Payne, with creator Neil Cross penning the script. Meanwhile, Netflix is producing the movie in association with the BBC. Cross and Elba are both producing, as well as Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and David Ready for Chernin Entertainment. Executive producers for the Luther movie are Dan Finlay (Chernin Entertainment), as well as Priscilla Parish for BBC Studios and Kris Thykier.

As for the cast, obviously, Idris Elba is returning in his award-winning role as DCI John Luther. The actor is also known for starring in The Wire, Thor and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. He also famously starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in The Dark Tower, a loose adaptation of Stephen King’s work.

Other cast members have been named as being Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo. However, as yet, no details are available for the characters they will play.

As per IMDb, Serkis is an English actor and director known for his voice work as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. He was also the voice of King Kong in the 2005 film. Meanwhile, Serkis also voiced Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, among many others. Most recently, he stars in the movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Meanwhile, Erivo is known for her roles in Bad Times at the El Royale, Harriet, and Widows. She has also been seen in the TV adaptation of Stephen King’s work, The Outsider. Most recently, Erivo has starred in the brilliant sci-fi pic, Needle in a Timestack.
