Blake Moynes, Katie Thurston split two months after proposal

The wedding’s off! On Monday, October 25, Katie Thurston and Blake Moynes released a joint statement that broke fans’ hearts. They revealed that they’ve decided to go their separate ways. Without getting into specifics, the statement read, in part, “We are not compatible as life partners.”

The breakup comes just shy of three months since The Bachelorette finale. Fans have a lot of questions about the split, including if Thurston will get to keep the ring.

Rules of engagement – Does Katie Thurston get to keep the engagement ring?

There have been a lot of broken engagements in the history of the Bachelor Nation franchise. Some splits happen before the season even gets to the After the Final Rose special.

Each ring is custom-made by famed jeweler Neil Lane. In August, Page Six described the ring as a “3-carat oval-shaped sparkler set within a crown motif and a hidden halo of 90 smaller diamonds.”

What happens to the ring now?

By all accounts, Katie Thurston will have to return the ring to the network. The show has a rule that the ring has to be returned if the engagement doesn’t last at least two years.

However, there are exceptions to the rule. For one, the rule didn’t exist during the show’s first few seasons. That means that Bob Guiney’s ex-fiance Estella Gardinier kept the ring, according to Us Weekly. However, she later auctioned the $45,000 ring for a cool $22k.

Even after the rule was implemented, some jilted fiances were able to keep the ring. Ali Fedotowsky kept the ring given to her by Roberto Martinez, despite breaking up 18 months after the finale.

That’s another part of the rule – the clock starts ticking after the season finale, not the date the engagement was filmed.

According to Ali F., she had an emotional breakdown over returning the ring, and the producers let her keep it.

Jillian Harris and Kaitlyn Bristowe also both kept their rings. Twice-engaged Bachelor Nation star Becca Kufrin kept one ring, but not the other. Us Weekly reports that she kept the ring from Garrett Yrigoyen, but not the one from Arie Luyendyk Jr.

It’s unclear if Season 16 Bachelorette Clare Crawley had to return her ring following her recent split from Dale Moss.
