FX ‘Impeachment: American Crime Story’ Releases New Trailer, More Details Revealed

FX has dropped another full-length trailer for Impeachment: American Crime Story,  the third installment of the anthology series that featured Versace’s murder and the O.J. Simpson trial.

Today during the Television Critics Association summer tour, FX presented the panel featuring executive producer Nina Jacobson, executive producer Brad Simpson, writer and executive producer Sarah Burgess, and actors Annaleigh Ashford, Sarah Paulson, and Beanie Feldstein.

During a panel question, they revealed that then-intern Monica Lewinsky was consulted on every word of this retelling of the 1998 Clinton White House scandal leveraged to force an impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton.

What do we know about Impeachment?

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s Impeachment: American Crime Story was the featured panel for Friday, August 20th, during the Television Critics Association’s 2021 summer tour.

The panel revealed that this reenacted scandal centered on Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky would take a fully grounded look at the machinations that lead to the calls for impeachment and the rise of Matt Drudge as the right-of-center media lynchpin who broke the news.

The tone of the new Impeachment: American Crime Story will be suitable for a wide audience and not sexually graphic, according to Burgess.

Following the footsteps of Season 1 (The People v. O.J. Simpson) and Season 2 (The Assassination of Gianni Versace), this retelling of the jaw-dropping presidential indiscretion is more than just a saga of a soiled blue dress.

Impeachment features a stunningly spot-on casting of brunette Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky, the intern who had a short-lived sexual affair with President Clinton. In addition, Sarah Paulson is transformed into her role as Linda Tripp with an expert wig and prosthetic makeup to make her the dead ringer of the confidante who betrayed Lewinsky.

Also added to the story is Annaleigh Ashford, cast (and transformed also) as Paula Jones, a civil servant who shared she had relations with Clinton.

And Margo Martindale is cast as Lucianne Goldberg, one of the key players in Clinton’s impeachment.

Rounding out the cast is Edie Falco as Hillary Clinton and Clive Owen as Bill Clinton.

Lewinsky served as the main consultant for the show as series writer Sarah Burgess relied upon Lewinsky’s book, Monica’s Story. “I went through every page of it with Monica,” Burgess said on the panel (TV Shows Ace, a member of TCA, was on the Zoom call).

Sarah Paulson balked a bit at a question that implied she made Tripp a fully unlikeable character. She said: “I don’t feel that way. I certainly think her choices are questionable, but in terms of her being unlikeable, I don’t share that view.”

Annaleigh Ashford never consulted with Paula Jones. Also, the Clintons were not consulted either.

Annaleigh Ashford and Clive Owen had dialect coaches, and the makeup to make Paulson resemble Linda Tripp took about three and a half hours. Robert Pickens was the associate wigmaker, and Shay Sanford-Fong served as the hairstylist to help design and recreate Tripp’s hairstyle at the time.

What happened back in 1998?

Impeachment: American Crime Story examines the crisis that led to the first impeachment of a U.S. President in over a century through the eyes of Monica Lewinsky, Linda Tripp, and Paula Jones.

All three women were thrown into the public spotlight during a time of partisan rancor and the dawn of digital shaming and minute-by-minute news coverage that spawned mass news aggregation and multiple blogger stories spun from one valid (or not) news source.

The installment is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Sarah Burgess, Sarah Paulson, Brad Falchuk, Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski, and Michael Uppendahl.

20th Television and FX Productions produce the series.
