OnlyFans has become a haven for 90 Day Fiance stars. Reality stars use the platform to sell nearly-nude photos or adult content. Larissa Lima was one of the first to join. Of course, her decision didn’t come without backlash. She claims that she needed help to fund her lifestyle and to get herself through school.
She has since quit the subscription-based platform. Earlier this year, Larissa shared her experience with OnlyFans. While she was one of the top sellers on the site, it wasn’t as easy and fun as it may have looked. She took to YouTube to post a video titled “The dark side of OnlyFans.”
OnlyFans to ban adult content starting October
The reason why OnlyFans is trending today is that it’s prohibiting adult content. 90 Day Fiance fans are wondering what their faves will do now. The site wants to shift away from adult entertainment. OnlyFans has become a safe place for cam girls, models, and actresses in the hardcore industry. For most, it’s their major source of income.
On Thursday, August 19, Bloomberg reported that the site will ban explicit content starting October 1st. The company revealed that it made the changes due to pressures from banks and payment providers. Creators on the platform can still post nude photos as long as they follow the website’s acceptable use policy. More information will come in the next few days.
“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” OnlyFans revealed in its email statement to The Verge. “OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform.”
There are currently over 2 million creators on the website. OnlyFans got a major uptick during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most earn over $5 billion collectively on the platform. Last year alone, the site generated $2 billion. However, creators only receive a 20 percent cut. OnlyFans has become notorious for adult content and has struggled to attract investors as a result.
What will the stars of 90 Day Fiance do now?
Only 90 Day Fiance fans know what their favorites share on their private accounts. Currently, there are over 130 million users on OnlyFans. However, that number could drop if the company does away with adult content come October. This is a moneymaker for the television personalities since they reportedly make $1,000 to appear in one season of the show.
Despite its popularity, adult content is a hard sell to investors. When Verizon sold Tumblr to Automatic, the blogging site permanently banned adult content in 2018. Many users left as a result and the site hasn’t been the same since. OnlyFans may find themselves struggling, as will its creators.
It will no longer be a captivating site for fans of the TLC show. Amid the announcement about adult content, OnlyFans shared its first-ever month transparency report for July. The report was made “as part of our commitment to safety and transparency.” Per In Touch Weekly, around 17 stars on 90 Day Fiance have their own OnlyFans account.
