Amazon ‘Mr. And Mrs. Smith’ TV Series To Star Donald Glover & Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Who could forget the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which famously starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt? It turns out Amazon Prime Video is in the process of developing a series based on the film. The lead roles in the series will be played by Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The 2005 film of Mr. and Mrs. Smith starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. In fact, they first met on the set of the movie and ended up together, despite him being married to Jennifer Aniston. But we digress. The latest news is that Amazon Prime Video is currently developing a series based on the film and with the same title. This time around, Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) will play the lead roles.

It turns out Glover and Waller-Bridge will also executive produce and co-create the series with the help of showrunner/executive producer Francesco Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo). The series version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video and will air in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios recently released a statement about the new Amazon series. Speaking of the actors, she said, “Talk about the dream team!” Salke said Glover and Waller-Bridge are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. She said it is “truly a dream” for them at Amazon. It will also be a dream for their global audience to have these “two forces of nature” working as a “powerhouse creative team.”

Salke described Mr. and Mrs. Smith as an “iconic property,” adding that Amazon can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe and Francesca make it their own. She closed, saying they are thrilled to be working with them as well as such great partners at New Regency.

About the film and the series’ stars

Directed by Doug Liman, the 2005 film followed the explosive story of a married couple. The Smiths discover they are secret assassins, working for competing espionage agencies. It was during the filming that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt famously met and fell in love.

As for the stars of the Amazon series, Glover and Waller-Bridge have starred together before. He played gambler Lando Calrissian and she voiced Lando’s droid companion, L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

A Mr. and Mrs. Smith series was planned before

As noted by The Verge, back in 2007, a sequel series of the film was in development for ABC. The series was to pick up the story from six months after the events in the film. While a pilot was filmed starring Martin Henderson and Jordana Brewster, the series was never picked up.

There is no news as yet as to when viewers can catch Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streaming channel, but it is certainly something to look forward to.
