Darth Vader is going to be making his television debut sometime in the near future. At least one version of the iconic hero is making an appearance.
During the Disney Investor day earnings call, the company divulged an absolute ton of information about their future plans. Included in those plans was an announcement that Hayden Christensen is going to reprise his role of Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series.
Christensen played the man who turned into Vader in the second and third movies in the Star Wars prequels. Anakin Skywalker started off as first a young boy and then a man who at first, just wanted to join the Jedi.
Unfortunately for the entire galaxy, Anakin’s background and upbringing meant he had quite a bit of hate in his heart. The emperor, who was first the chancellor of the republic, twisted Anakin into his henchman. When Christensen’s Skywalker and Ewan McGregor’s younger Obi-Wan did battle at the end of the Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Skywalker was badly injured.
In fact, if it weren’t for the advanced technology used in Star Wars, he would have died. Instead, most of his body was replaced with machinery and he was reborn as Darth Vader.
Darth Vader On The Hunt
Now both iconic characters join Disney Plus. The Obi-Wan series is a limited event, rather than something like The Mandalorian. It will have one season and one season only.
That should be enough to get a good look at what Darth Vader and Obi-Wan were up to between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
A New Hope was the original Star Wars film, but the prequels reshuffled the deck, making it in the fourth in the nine-installment “Skywalker Saga.”
None of the films delved into the gap in years between the prequels and everything that came after them. Fans got only bits and pieces here and there as Vader and Obi-Wan faced off in a climactic A New Hope scene, where the Sith warrior strikes down the Jedi.
Christensen Reprising Belittled Role
The casting of Hayden Christensen is a gutsy move by Disney Plus. The actor’s character was never one of the most popular in the movie franchise.
There are some Star Wars fans who tend to ignore him completely. Others routinely express outrage or just rage that he’s a part of the series. However, Disney Plus would make the argument he has to come back for the series.
He’s part of the canon now. Hayden Christensen’s bringing Darth Vader to the Obi-Wan series is the only way we’re going to get to see what really happened between the rise of the empire and the maturation of the Skywalker children.
