‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 Spoilers: Does Meredith Have Coronavirus?
Caution: There are spoilers in this post from the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiered with a two-hour episode focused on the coronavirus pandemic. While there were some flashbacks to a time before the pandemic, much of the episode picked up months into it. Bailey quickly set up the hospital, but that wouldn’t prevent the virus from spreading.
The ending to the two-hour episode saw Meredith Grey unconscious in the parking lot. Hayes found her, so we know that the doctors will get to work helping her, but the big question is what she’s suffering from. After all, it’s rather concerning that she’s ended up on some dream-like beach seeing McDreamy!
Is Meredith ill? Many fans suspect that she has the coronavirus.
Meredith Has Spent a Lot of Time with Coronavirus Patients
During the premiere, we saw that Meredith was one of the doctors regularly in the new COVID ICU Grey Sloan Memorial has set up. She mentioned she lost another patient while Bailey showed Webber around, and it is clearly not the first. As more patients die, Meredith has to make more heartbreaking phone calls to family members. She wants to make sure patients don’t die alone, but that’s not easy with how fast the disease is progressing.
If anyone was going to catch the virus, it was going to be Meredith with how much she was around the patients. Bailey did mention that other hospitals have seen doctors contract the virus, almost foreshadowing of things to come.

The Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Episode 3 Promo Suggests COVID
Just looking at the promo for the upcoming new episode, it looks like theories of coronavirus are right. Meredith is in a hospital bed wearing a mask. That’s not completely out of the ordinary. A lot of hospitals have mandated masks, even for patients in beds. It helps to limit the risk to everyone.
Bailey next to her is the one that suggests Meredith has coronavirus. She is in the PPE equipment Meredith and others wore in the COVID ICU. When treating patients outside of this area, the doctors have worn the general masks.
Bailey says to Meredith “God forbid, this gets any worse,” and Meredith takes a labored breath after that, suggesting that she has breathing troubles. We all know struggling to breathe has been one of the biggest symptoms of the coronavirus.
There is a shot of Meredith in the MRI scanner, but it doesn’t seem to be for a head wound. The scanner is around her chest, continuing this suggestion of breathing problems. It looks like we’ll see the disease in one of our own at Grey Sloan Memorial.
At least the season won’t be all doom and gloom. As ET shared, there is love in the air for a couple of characters, including Maggie and Winston.
