Hopefully Kim Kardashian had a happy 40th birthday. It appears she’s going to spend the next few days doing damage control.
The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star is getting blasted on social media for how she celebrated the big event. After announcing the big 4-0, she also let her millions of fans know how she planned to celebrate.
In a Twitter post on Tuesday she said she took her “closest inner circle” on an island getaway. It’s a safe bet Kim thought she covered her bases.
“After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.”
Kim apparently thought the issue most people would be concerned about her spreading the coronavirus. Instead of avoiding a backlash, she drew a tsunami of scorn.
Kim Kardashian Becomes A Meme
The overwhelming response to the post pointed out how she was flaunting her wealth and privilege while the country dealt with a pandemic. Several posters pointed out they didn’t have the money to do anything similar.
“Good for you. I lost four months of pay, still tied up with unemployment and have seen a significant drop in future earnings,” one follower sarcastically tweeted. “I’m helping my daughters with childcare and virtual school for my granddaughter. Still haven’t gotten my 2019 tax return. Glad you had fun.”
“cool, people have had to say goodbye to loved ones over the phone while they died alone in a hospital. but neat trip to post all over social media while the world suffers. so humble and so down to earth, truly.” Another wrote.
Other Twitter users turned Kim’s post into a meme.

New York Times opinion columnist Jamelle Bouie probably won the Internet with his meme attempt.

He even had a nice shout out to the 1973 version of The Wicker Man.
While some of those bashing the Kardashian getaway had jokes and sarcasm, it wasn’t all fun and games. Journalist Kat Kinsman talked about having to say goodbye to her dying mother using FaceTime because of the virus.
You know what would have felt normal for me, Kim? Not having to say goodbye to my mother over FaceTime as she was dying of COVID. Not hearing her ashes be interred over the goddamned phone so I wouldn't put my dad and sister at risk. Rubbing in this our faces is cruel & clueless.

Some Defend The Trip
Most social media commenters voiced their displeasure over Kim’s post. However, there were defenders among the hordes.
More than a few of the reality television star’s followers took aim at her critics. Several asked why it was the Kardashian family’s fault that other people were suffering.
One follower blasted the critics for trying to tell celebrities how to spend their own money. Another pointed out the problems most people go through exist whether or not Kim and her family take a vacation.
The Kardashian clan hasn’t commented on the controversy. If Kim is seeing a backlash, she’s not letting it get to her. On Wednesday morning, she posted more pictures from her trip on her Instagram account.
