Jill Duggar Dillard spent most of her life as a reality television star. Then, three years ago, she put an end to that. On Wednesday, the mother of two opened up to People about why she ended her TV career.
For the last several years, Jill’s relationship with her family changed. She got her start with the Duggar family on 19 Kids and Counting.
The TLC show documented the ultra-religious and ultra-conservative upbringing she and her siblings received in the massive household. When it was canceled in 2015, Jill made the jump to its spinoff, Counting On.
Two years later, she quietly quit the program. Now 29-years-old, the reality TV personality said she and her husband Derick realized they lost the ability to dictate the direction of their own lives.
“Our control to choose what jobs we were allowed to accept and even where we were allowed to live was taken away from us,” Jill said while adding that goals the couple planned didn’t come to fruition if they clashed with the family or the network.
31-year-old Derick is in his last year of law school. He’s far more excited about what completion of his education means these days. He told the website when he and Jill were working on Counting On, they routinely ran into roadblocks.

Jill Duggar Dillard Has Control
Dictating their own lives hasn’t been without consequences. Earlier this month, the couple admitted leaving Counting On led to emotional distancing from the rest of the Duggar clan.
Jill and Derick got some blowback from TLC as well. However, the couple made their minds up. “By that point we’d had enough. We knew we had to pull out completely to reevaluate and get our bearings,” Jill said.
When reached for comment, TLC didn’t offer an explanation. The elder Duggars did though and in a statement, agreed with the couple about some strife existing.
“Every family has differences of opinion and perspective at times, but families work things out. We all love Jill, Derick, and their boys very much. It is our prayer that our relationship is healed and fully restored quickly!”
Family Life Without Cameras
Since Jill and Derick’s departure from Counting On, they’ve embraced a more “normal” life. They aren’t adhering to strict rules.
They’re out from under rules like not using birth control, or even banning “revealing” clothing. She’s got a nose ring now. She enjoys a glass of wine or a cocktail now and then. She even shows off her knees in well-worn jeans.
The former reality television stars still have a strong fan following. However, those followers don’t get to watch them on television. Social media is the medium of choice these days. They still have millions of followers but they have more control there as well. Jill Duggar Dillard and Derick only post what they want people to see, rather than have every second of their lives recorded.
