Whitney Way Thore, star of My Big Fat Fabulous Life, on normalizing fat women showing skin

People reports that Whitney Way Thore wants people to stop calling fat women “brave for showing skin.” Rightfully so as Whitney emphasizes that showing skin is “normal.” Undoubtedly, many women agree with the reality star. The idea that showing skin just because your fat doesn’t take courage. It also doesn’t make you brave. Ultimately, Whitney explains that it is patronizing how “some people react when they see ‘fat women showing skin.’

These comments from Whitney come shortly after a series of Instagram posts of her in a variety of beautiful swimsuits. Fans of My Big Fat Fabulous life know that Whitney has always been a substantial advocated for body positivity. Additionally, her Instagram feed is full of body-positive, inspiring photos for her followers to see.

Consequently, the Instagram post of her in a swimsuit has a long, well thought out caption. This post is thought-provoking, to say the least. She begins the long caption with, “If you’re a fat person, wearing a sleeveless shirt in 90° weather, how many times has someone shaken their head in disbelief and pointed out how BRAVE you are?”

In the lengthy caption, she puts the haters and trolls on blast, “If you’re a fat person, and you post photos of yourself on the internet swimming, laughing, or otherwise living life joyfully alongside other thin people doing the same thing, how many times has someone declared their envy and cheered you on for how BRAVE you are are?”

Poignantly wrapping up her post she writes, “If you are NOT a fat person, how many times have you actually thought about how bizarre this is?” The ultimate message of the post is, “Fat women showing skin isn’t brave. It’s normal.”

Identifying as fat and self-acceptance

Fans of My Big Fat Fabulous Life and Whitney Way Thore adore and accept Whitney for who she is. Admittedly, Whitney has gone through a lot and recently opened up to People about why she is embracing the term ‘fat‘. Just last month she shares on social media, “It’s actually insulting to insist that a fat person who identified as fat actually isn’t fat.” Remarkably, she goes on to write, “If you try to convince me otherwise, you’re simply reinforcing the notion that being fat is bad.”

Whitney also shines a light on the fact that oftentimes people like to couple ‘compliments’ with other adjectives. For example, “You’re not fat; you’re beautiful!/funny!/smart!” Whitneys how this is problematic. She shares, “…you have not reconciled that a person can simultaneously be fat and possess good qualities and be likable.. and that’s a problem for you to work out, not people.”
