About Peanuts‘ character Snoopy

Snoopy was created in the mid century by Schulz who drew him in 1950. Schulz, according to his biography, was going to call him Sniffy but found out that name was taken already. He then changed the dog’s name to Snoopy.

And for extended family, Snoopy’s brother Spike was first drawn up in 1975. Following that character, Schulz introduced a female beagle named Belle. A single mother dog with a teenage son, Snoopy’s only nephew. The 1980’s saw more relatives: Marbles came briefly, just one story line and then Olaf and Andy,

Snoopy’s unnamed father made an appearance in 1989 for a strip in commemoration of Father’s Day.

As for Peanuts-the name was a tip of the hat to predecessor in children’s programming, Howdy Doody, where the kids were referred to as “peanuts” as in the “peanut gallery.”

Schulz, in a 1973 interview with Liberty Magazine described Snoopy as having a contradicting personality traits, he was both kind and selfish, and a bit withdrawn in the expression of affection to his erstwhile owner, Charlie Brown.

Apple TV+ takes Snoopy on

Also noted is that this new series will keep to the Peanuts “unique animation style” that has worked for Schulz and company for seven decades.
