The smoke is starting to clear from Ruby Rose’s departure from Batwoman. On Friday, Javicia Leslie took to Instagram to show fans they look they can expect when the CW and HBO Max series returns this fall.
“Look out, Gotham, I’m suited up and ready to go… But wait until Ryan Wilder puts her own spin on the Batsuit,” she captioned the photo.
At first glance, it looks like Ryan Wilder’s own spin on Batwoman is similar to Kate Kane’s. The new suit shows off the iconic cowl and the red wavy hair.
It appears when Leslie hits the small screen; her Batwoman alter ego, Ryan Wilder, will use the same disguise technique Rose’s Kane did. The red hair is part of a wig, meant to throw enemies off the civilian alter-ego trail.
While Batman is known as the Dark Knight, in Batwoman, the red hair is more than a disguise. It also gives her another nickname. Kane established the Crimson Knight as Gotham’s newest crime fighter.
Javicia Leslie is excited about the ‘Batwoman’ role.
The relatively unknown actor stepped into the Crimson Knight role after Ruby Rose exited the superhero drama unexpectedly earlier this year. Leslie recently talked to Entertainment Weekly about how fired up she is for the part.
“When I read the character description, it was definitely me,” She said about Ryan Wilder. “I loved the idea that it’s like goofy meets badass meets a person who doesn’t like to be told what to do; a person who does not like to follow the rules.”
“This has literally been my dream,” she added. Leslie said it’d been one of her career goals to play a superhero. She said people don’t get to see a Black superhero all that often.
The newest Batwoman means the CW has two. Leslie’s Wilder joins Cress Williams’ Black Lightning as the only two Black superheroes on television. Eventually, they’ll be joined by Disney Plus’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Leslie is the first Black female superhero on television.
The actor is well aware of that distinction. It’s one of the things that has her so excited about Batwoman.
Who is Ryan Wilder?
While Kate Kane is a character pulled from the DC comics, Wilder is a television creation. That allows Leslie to take her character in its own, original direction.
Screenrant reportedly acquired some details about the new Batwoman. While Kane’s background hails from a military school, Wilder’s is going to be more haphazard. The site said her fighting style is “highly skilled and wildly undisciplined.”
Anyone wanting to look at Javicia Leslie before she puts on the cowl can watch her work most recently in God Friended Me. The actor had a recurring role as Ali Finer in that dramedy series.
