Peacemaker is coming to HBO Max in the not so distant future. The Suicide Squad spinoff series will bring John Cena and James Gunn to the network.

Cena plays the titular character in the upcoming Suicide Squad reboot on the big screen which is both directed and written by Gunn. Once the movie is completed and released, DC Comics fans are going to get more.

When the new series does launch, it will be the most high profile DCU series on the platform. HBO Max ordered eight episodes, sight unseen. The new show is set as an action-adventure, comedy.

The exact plot isn’t known. It’s a safe bet Peacemaker will pick up where the movie leaves off for Cena’s character.  The series is expected to explore the origins of the anti-hero. In the comics, Peacemaker is a man who stops at nothing to keep the peace. Killing anyone and everyone won’t keep him from his goals.

Production will start in early 2021.

James Gunn to have a busy year

With the new Suicide Squad movie not releasing until August of 2021, it’s possible the Peacemaker series hits HBO Max just months later. Indeed, no matter when Peacemaker launches, next year promises to be a busy one for Gunn.

He’s sandwiching in the DCU movie and production of the new show into work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag,” Gunn said in a statement announcing the project. “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

Gunn and Cena are executive producers for the new project. Gunn will also write and direct at least some of the eight episodes.

The new deal expands Gunn’s role in the DC entertainment universe. He’s already established himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to his first two Guardians of the Galaxy films. He was also an executive producer on both Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War. Those films grossed billions of dollars globally.

Peacemaker origins

Promotional materials of Cena’s character shows his costume is relatively loyal to the comic version.

In the books Peacemaker’s alter ego, Christopher Smith started out as someone who used only non-lethal force. Eventually, his quest drove him mad and led him to believe he was haunted by the spirit of his father, who was a commandant of a Nazi death camp.

Later on in his career as a “super hero” he kills at the slightest provocation. He also believed the ghosts of his victims were stored inside his helmet. He thought those specters advised him in his adventures.
