Broadway may be shuttered until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but fans can still catch some of the shows! After Disney+’s huge success with Hamilton, other platforms are turning to plays and musicals for content. Netflix is adapting the play “The Boys in the Band.”

What is “The Boys in The Band”?

“The Boys in the Band” is a 1968 play written by Mart Crowley. Sadly, he passed away in early 2020 from a heart attack. While he didn’t get to see Netflix’s adaptation, they aren’t the first to turn “The Boys in the Band” into a film. The movie of the same name came out in 1970, two years after it’s off-Broadway debut.

In 2018, it came back to New York for a Broadway revival. The main actors in the 2018 production were comprised of openly gay men.

In the 1968 play, a group of gay men gather for a birthday party in New York City. Remember, being gay was not acceptable in society in 1968. The drama occurs when a guest has a secret connection to the party’s host, per blogger Michael Fairman.

The 2018 play won Best Revival at the Tony Awards. The main cast all signed on with the Netflix adaptation.

The Boys in The Band Star Matt Bomer Open to White Collar Reboot

Matt Bomer is most recognized for his lead role in the USA network’s White Collar series. The show ran from 2009 to 2014. Six years after it’s cancellation, fans are still clamoring for Season 7. Bomer is completely down with the idea, despite his successful career.

In addition to Broadway, he took on an important role in the final season of Will & Grace. He played the love interest of Eric McCormack’s Will. We won’t spoil you for how that relationship ends up.

But before he was on primetime, he got his start in daytime. His very first role was a forgettable part on All My Children. However, he gained many soap fans for his role as Ben Reade on Guiding Light

This fan video from YouTube show’s the trajectory of Matt Bomer’s time as Ben on the CBS soap.

He’s not the only former soap star in Netflix’s The Boys in the Band.

One Life to Live’s Tuc Watkins Has a Role in the Netflix Film

Soap fans will tell you that the character of David Vickers is dastardly. Dastardly funny. As played by Tuc Watkins, David became half of the soap super couple David and Dorian (soap icon Dorian Strasser.)

The on-screen pairing raised eyebrows at first due to the age difference. However, the humor and heart of Tuc Watkins quickly won fans over.

Watkins joined One Life to Life as David Vickers in 1994. He stayed with the soap until it went off the air in 2013.

The actor is currently in a relationship with his The Boys in the Band co-star Andrew Rannells.

Rounding out the main cast are Zachary Quinto (Heroes,) Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory,) Michael Benjamin Washington and Robin de Jesús

The Boys in the Band is directed by filmmaker Joe Mantello. It drops on Netflix on September 30. Be sure to follow us on social media for the latest television and streaming news.
