American Idol premiered on Sunday and a whole bunch of new talent emerged for the season. While the Top 20 spoilers emerged already, those who don’t care for those naturally enjoyed the auditions. The hopefuls all hold out for that golden ticket to Hollywood. One of those people, Douglas Kiker’s a garbage collector. Katy Perry, all emotional, told him his talent’s not garbage.

American Idol – garbage man Douglas Kiker sings “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts

Introducing himself to the judges, Douglas Kiker explained he lives in Alabama. 27-years-old, he works on “the back of a garbage truck.” He never performed anywhere else and just loves singing as he works. Hoping to give Kiker an edge, Lionel Richie sent him with Ryan Seacrest to go and warm up his voice in the street.

Returning after 15 minutes, Kiker got his chance and showed the judges his talent. First, he told them his reason for doing the show. He hopes his little girl learns that “if she puts her mind to it, there’s nothing you can’t do.” Initially, he sang without any accompaniment. But after Katy told him to show them his range, he didn’t know what that she meant. So, American Idol judge Luke got on the piano and Doug sang.

Katy Perry gets emotional about the garbage man

Before Katy cried, Lionel Richie told him, “I want us all to let you know, you’re a hell of a man…I want you to come get this ticket. You’re going to Hollywood!” Katy, wiping her tears, giving him a hug, said he’s “gonna go so far.” Plus, she told him “you gonna take [his] daughter with [him].” As Ryan led him away, Katy called out, “Hey Doug, that wasn’t garbage, that was great.”

Fans also reacted to the clip that American Idol put up on YouTube. One wrote, “This guy has such a humble heart and a beautiful voice. Even if he doesn’t go all the way in the competition, I hope and pray someone takes him under their wing and teaches him what he needs to know about singing. His voice/talent should be shared with the world, he’s that good.”
