Recent chatter among the cast of The Real Housewives of New Jersey (RHONJ) suggests culture plays a role in what men can and can’t get away with.

Drama is arguably one of the biggest reasons why Bravo viewers enjoy watching The Real Housewives. It, however, goes without saying that the viewers at home sometimes find themselves screaming at the screen.

RHONJ Teresa and Joe Giudice were constantly caught on camera in a way that made fans of the Bravo series enraged. Cameras managed to capture Joe calling his wife names. They also captured him telling her to “shut up.”

Examples like the one above have many fans wondering… Why do the housewives allow their husbands to get away with such bad behavior?

Fortunately, during the RHONJ After Show, the women on the cast sat down and discussed it.

RHONJ cast revealed the series shed light on what was considered a cultural norm.

According to the women of the RHONJ cast, it was considered the cultural norm. The housewives, however, are grateful for the show. They believe it shined a light on this travesty. And, they believe things could change for the better now.

During the chatter, Teresa Giudice also opened up about her husband. A producer of the series brought up an incident when Joe told his wife he needed to find a doctor like the one Dolores Catania had. The producer wanted clarity on if he was serious or just messing around when he made that request.

Teresa believed that her husband just wanted what was best for her. Producers followed this conversation by showing a clip of Joe Giudice threatening his wife. He told her to shut up. And, he threatened to smack her head “against the wall” if she continued to discuss her father.

The women on the RHONJ cast insisted it was hard to pass judgement too harshly on Joe. After all, it was just the way Italian men were brought up.

“But at one time I didn’t know any better.” Jackie Goldschneider added to the conversation, “I think maybe sometimes they use the term ‘old school’ to justify a lot of behaviors so they don’t feel bad.”

Melissa Gorga added, “Right it’s like, ‘We can’t help it because this is how we were born.’”

Teresa Giudice found some of the footage shocking and hard to believe.

Teresa Giudice was shocked when she watched and listened to footage of her husband calling her a derogatory name during a group trip. In fact, she even tried to get the producers to remove the clip. Was some of his bad behavior just an act for the camera? Teresa seemed to think so.

“It’s so weird, but he’d only do it in front of the cameras!” She added to the conversation.
