‘The Act’: What Really Happened to Gypsy’s Grandma?
The Act on Hulu has caught a lot of viewers attention. It’s a (mostly) true story of what happened with Gypsy Rose Blanchard and the murder of her mother Dee Dee. Gypsy is currently still in prison for her actions against her mother.
Last week, fans got a glimpse into the life of Dee Dee’s mom. So is what was seen actually what happened? Women’s Health shared the real story of Emma Pitry. Fair warning, it’s not pretty.
Was ‘The Act’ Storyline True?
In The Act we saw Dee Dee go to jail. While she’s in jail her mother takes care of baby Gypsy who, at the time, was completely healthy. However, before she goes away, her (Gypsy’s) mom lays out a precise schedule and insists Emma stays to it. Were these signs early on of Dee-Dee’s condition?
By the time Dee-Dee returns from jail, Gypsy is off her schedule. You can see Dee-Dee begin to resent her mom. As her moms health deteriorates, Dee Dee doesn’t help keep her alive. Eventually, she even gives her extra meds which ultimately results in her death.

Is this what really happened in real life though?
In real life, Emma was a lot like Dee Dee. She even shop lifted just like her daughter. In real life, Emma and Dee Dee didn’t get along. Seeing how Dee Dee treated Gypsy, this doesn’t come as a surprise.
“Dee Dee was starving [Emma],” Kristy, Dee Dee’s stepmom said in a documentary about the situation. “Dee Dee wasn’t giving her anything to eat. I asked her sister—you know, I was like, ‘I hate to ask this, but you think Dee Dee had anything to do with her mom’s death?’ And she, you know, said, ‘Now I wonder.'”
It’s unclear on Emma’s real cause of death. However, in the same documentary, it is mentioned that Dee Dee may have tried to poison her step mom. How did she do this? By putting weed killer in her food while she was living with her.
Laura was sick and bedridden for nine months. Once Dee Dee moved out, Laura got much better. This doesn’t for certain mean Dee Dee killer her mom, however it would cause reason to speculate even harder.
